PHOTO SELECTION

Here are a selection of photos I may be using for my magazine. I chose to vary my images between both male and female models so I could see when making my magazine pages whether or not if it would be better to challenge a typical R&B magazine or to go with a mainstream one. I decided to do a variety of poses for each picture since a pose on the magazine is what makes it stand out for this particular genre. If the body language of the model looks too soft and not aggressive, it would not really relate to this particular genre as R&B/Hip-hop models have an aggressive way to show their personality through their body language.

Also, I have included various props such as headphones, chains, microphones and for one of them I included a basketball as this genre is usually hybridised with other genres so it can appeal to a bigger audience and not just a specific one. I also decided to use either a plain white or black background because I wanted the model to stand out from the page. To do this, I used different lighting techniques to make them seem brighter from the background or if the background was white, I would give them dark clothing to contrast with the white background.

I specifically chose to make black and white the main colours of the costumes for my models because it relates to the darkness and the goodness of the artists today. The black on white or white on black shows the contrast between what we actually see when they are presented in the media and what they are really like in their own personal lives.

MUSIC PHOTO SHOOT PLAN

MAIN TASK:  MY MAGAZINE PROPOSAL                                               Why?
Working title:

tune
Relates to the colloquial language when you hear a good song
Genre:

R&B
It is the most well liked genre in the music industry
Target Audience:

aspirers
Aspirers are usually teenage kids or young adults ad this is the biggest target audience for any music industry
Price:

£2-£3
Low prices
Convergence:

Chains, specific colour scheme, black people

Chains and this specific race is dominant in this genre
Feedback from primary research will act upon

layout
colour scheme
these are two important aspects of magazines which are normally made for this kind of genre. the colours need to be bright and vibrant to draw the readers attention and there is a certain layout which consists in all the magazines. this is usually with a strong powerful image in the middle.

REPRESENTATION:                                                                                          Why?
Choice of model on front cover:

Female

To challenge the stereotype of R&B being male dominated and goes against the main stereotype of most artists being black

PHOTO-SHOOT  FRONT COVER:                                                                                Why?
Location:

Plain background
from my research, I found out that most hip-hop/R&B magazines use a plain background to make the image of the model stand out more than any parts of the text.
Props:

Snapback cap
Chain

Costume:
Baseball jacket

This particular genre usually associates with other industries other than music such as sport. This helps both the sport and music industry gain a lot of recognition to widen the audience for both.
Shots:
Different angles?

close-up
Because i am using a plain background, I will use a very powerful close up shot of my model as I have researched that this is very popular in a lot of hip-hop/R&B magazines out there right now.
Gestures/Body language:

Different poses?

PHOTO-SHOOT CONTENTS PAGE:                                                                            Why?
3 different set-ups at least
1.
Location:

studio
One of the main areas where R&B artists are generally at
Models:

female

Props:

microphone
Stereotypical R&B prop which is used frequently in R&B magazine shoots
Costume:

Casual clothing
By looking through my research I have found that mainstream R&B artists are normally in expensive but casual clothing.
Shots:

Long shot/mid shot
Again going through my primary research, I have seen that long shots/mid shots are used on this page which use to connote the R&B genre through their costume and props. If I was to use a close up shot of my model, it would force my viewers to focus more on their face and features rather than the conventions used in their costume, which is what I don’t want to do. Shot of her slightly off centre will show make it look more professional and to give more space for me to put my contents down.
Gestures/Body language:

Holding that microphone, facing away from the camera
A direct mode of address wouldn’t be necessary as it wouldn’t be the first thing which my viewers will see. My chosen artist/model would be singing into a microphone to relate to my genre of my music magazine

2.

Location:

Urban area
R&B is generally classed as an urban type of music so a background with graffiti in the background would be ideal for my model/artist
Models:

Male
Is usually male dominant
Props:

chains
Chains are a typical prop used by R&B and Hip-Hop artists so I will use a stereotypical prop of this particular type of music.
Costume:
Topless

Having a topless male model, it would link to the female gaze which helps to sell more and it is also another typical representation of a hip-hop artist.
Shots:

Mid-Shot

Gestures/Body language:

Direct mode of address
this will make anyone who reads it catch their attention immediately as it makes it seem like they are relating it to them.

FINAL EVALUATION OF MY COLLEGE MAGAZINE

Here are both of my final designs for my front cover and contents page of my College Magazine. There are some things I will keep and some things i will have to improve on.

KEEP:

  • i will keep the centrally framed image not because it is part of the design brief but because it has such a powerful image being in the centre so it immediately catches your attention.

CHANGES:
  • For both my contents page and my front cover i will change the layout of my magazine as it does not look professional and it does not look appealing to anyone who sees it.
  • I also have to change the colour scheme of my magazine
      • Try to use more images for the contents page.

In order for my magazine to be like a professional College Magazine, I have to have a colour scheme which i must sick to so that important details will stand out and so it looks more sophisticated.
I also have to properly lay out everything in both pages. My attempt of making a magazine is all over the place and is not properly structured. Next time I will carefully place the Masthead behind the image and not make it transparent, layout my sell lines and puff in a place where it is more suitable and not just put it anywhere.
As for the contents page, I will try to include more detail in it as it does not contain enough information and i will also change the layout.

Genre:

College magazine

Part of the design brief
Target Audience:

Teenagers, aspirers

Price:

£1-£2
This is due to the results of my survey. Majority of people decided it was more appropriate
Convergence:
Use links to social networking sites to make it more accessible.

Since the internet is more accessible to teenagers, putting links on social networking sites to access the magazine will be an easier way to sell or read the magazine
Feedback from primary research will act upon

Main features of the magazine (layout, sell lines, masthead, colour)
If the magazine article is not appealing to anyone who sees it, it will affect to who reads it and how many people actually want to buy the magazine. Brighter colours and texts which stand out is much more suitable to a college audience.

REPRESENTATION:                                                                                          Why?
Choice of model on front cover:

6th form student. Normal college life

If I put a normal student as the cover, it will relate to everyone and not just a specific group such as athletes. Will not discriminate the different groups within a college community.

PHOTO-SHOOT  FRONT COVER:                                                                                Why?
Location:

Outside of the school building
Want to include the school in the background so it can clearly show that it is aimed at mainly college students within the school.
Props:

Books
If I included items which can relate to a student, it will draw the attention of the reader which is a college student.

Formal clothing

It is the main dress attire of a normal college student.

Gestures/Body language:

PHOTO-SHOOT CONTENTS PAGE:                                                                            Why?
3 different set-ups at least
1.
Location:

Sports hall
Ideal place for my main article as it is mainly aimed at student athletes
Models:

Student athlete
Chose a student athlete as it is a main problem within a School. Although it may be aimed mostly at athletes, it could also link to how hobbies such as music
Props:

 basketball, folders
Portrays that students are balancing their school life with a hobby such as sports.
Costume:
Basketball kit

Sport is done in school and it represents what school they come from. Relates to the target audience as it is part of the school environment.
Shots:

Mid shot
Centrally framed so that it immediately stands out from the magazine. Also could be looking directly at the camera as a direct mode of address.
Gestures/Body language:

Holding a basketball in one hand a folder in another
Shows that he/she is trying to balance the college life with his/hers basketball career

2.
Location:

In a hall within the school.
As it is a college magazine, it is ideal if I put students within the college so it can relate to my main audience
Models:

Random student in 6th form

Props:

Books, bag, pen
Include props which is normal  for a college student so it feels like
Costume:
Uniform

Main things student wears and it is formal
Shots:

Two shot/ wide shot
If I include two people in my contents page, it will show that school is a friendly environment.
Gestures/Body language:

 standing upright
relates to the title "aspire" as they are standing upright showing they would show they have a lot of pride and they want themselves to do well

SKETCH OF MY MAGAZINE

This is my rough sketch up of my magazine idea. I will use this to give me an idea of how to make my real college magazine design. This is a plain example of how I got inspiration from other college magazines to help me produce this.

SURVEY RESULTS

What format would you prefer in a magazine?
From this information, I can tell that people prefer if my magazine had more sell lines. This may be because of the fact that the sell lines make readers want to see what content is within the magazine and the sell lines only say this in front cover of a magazine. Without the sell lines, I won't be able to attract other audiences not just my main audience which is college students. It could also attract adults to see what college life is about now.

How much are you willing to spend on a magazine?
People were willing to choose a lower price of between 50p-£1 rather than £4+ because since college students are mainly teenagers, they would most probably would rather pay less since it is hard for teenagers to get money as easily as adults who have full time jobs without interfering with school.  By lowering the price it will also make more people want to buy the magazine since it shows that people are willing to buy at a lower price

Is the picture and sell lines important to a magazine?
My results show that sell lines and the picture is important to a magazine cover because these are the main things of a magazine as they attract the most attention if you see a quick glimpse of the magazine. This is because they contain exclusive information and the bright coloring of  the text and of what the person at the front is wearing immediately draws your attention to it.
